Gerry Long verschickt regelmäßig per Mail \"Uke-Tipps\".

GERRY\'S UKE-TIPS

OCTOBER, 2009

NO!  GERRY\'S UKE-TIPS didn\'t disappear, just went on a long vacation.

Actually, I\'ve been busy with another chord-solo book, a new book which will feature twenty great old standard tunes.  As soon as some details are worked out, I\'ll bring out more info on it.

Also, I\'ve been doing some video taping and putting some videos onto YOUTUBE.  My YOUTUBE site is    --   http://www.youtube.com/RGerryLong
In addition to some solo numbers, you\'ll see some performances of a senior group I have worked with, which is called Instant Harmony.  There are also some familiar standard jazz/broadway/Tin Pan Alley tunes, which is what I like best about the ukulele.  You\'ll find my version of Slow Boat To China very different.  The first time through is in the key of A in waltz time, and the second time is in Bb in swing style.

Which brings up the question:

HOW DO YOU USE YOUR UKULELE?

You\'ll probably fit into one of the following categories:
1) I love to sing, and use the uke to accompany my solo singing.

2) I have some technical experience and can play chord solos (chord melodies), using melody and chords together.

3) I do both of the above.  (a very select group)

4) I do neither of the above, but participate in group ukulele groups, joining others to sing out of the group song book.  (90% of all uke players?)

UKE-TIPS will be most helpful to you if you are in the first category, because our emphasis is to give you some help with chord progressions which make songs easier to learn.  Example:  If you memorize the chords to Five Foot Two (only five chords) in several keys, you have learned the basic chords (with some slight variations) to dozens of songs.

We also include help for chord-solo* (chord melody) playing, though that is a much more select group of players.  Many of you want to sing and play, and our goal is to help you achieve your goal.

We have mentioned in the past different commonly used progressions.  Let\'s do a review of an important one.

The following, on the Heart and Soul progression will emphasize our focus.

THE UBIQUITOUS HEART AND SOUL PROGRESSION

Back in an earlier UKE-TIPS (#7) we mentioned the importance of learning (commiting to memory) what I call the Heart and Soul progression.  In our popular music it is indeed almost over-used - especially in the fifties and sixties pop music era.  But it also appears in some of our greatest songs, not repeated over and over, but used in a manner which is often a surprise.  Example:  Dream A Little Dream Of Me - standard key G.  Just before the bridge the composer suddently throws in a Bb7, leading to the Heart and Soul progression in the key of Eb for most of the bridge. - Eb, Cmin, Fm7, and Bb7 three times.  The lyrics and chords of that part of the song are listed below, so you can see how the change from he key of G to the key of Eb is used.
